Opel Astra III
"The new Opel Astra III symbolizes the dynamic character of Opel more than any other previous model of this segment. Through its expressive style Opel Astra III clearly distinguishes itself in the compact car segment. Beacue Opel has a strong representation in this segment thanks to Zafira and Meriva we could go a little further to underline the individual character in the stylistic of the new Astra. This gives us a significant edge over our competitors” – said the General Director of Opel, Carl-Peter Forster.
Opel Astra III (H) is equipped with an adaptive suspension system IDSPlus (Interactive Driving System) along with a unique damping control system CDC (Continuous Damping Control). The optional IDSPlus system has a special sport mode improving driving characteristics. IDSPlus system integrates all undercarriage and driving elements. Transmission, engine, ABS, ESP Plus and Continuous Damping Control (CDC) are connected through a CAN network. This effects in great car performance and better dynamic and safety characteristics.
Other options consist of self-regulating front light system AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting). The new Opel Astra III is the first car in this class equipped with AFL. This system reacts to the angle of the steering wheel and car speed and adjusts the angle of the light beams during turns by +/- 15°.
The new Opel Astra III in 5-door chassis version appeared on the market in spring 2004 and soon a combi (autumn 2004) and 3-door (spring 2005) version will join it. In the beginning Opel Astra III was offered in 8 engine versions: 5 gasoline and 3 turbo-diesel engines – max power: between 80 and 200 hp. A new feature was the new 1,9L CDTI (150 hp) and 2,0L (170 hp) gasoline engine.
"Through the third generation of Astras we stress the dynamic character and expressive style of the new Opel models. This concerns also the interior of the Astra, which dominate clear, large surfaces creating a feeling of harmony. This connects well with the high quality finish and material used.” - said Martin Smith, Project director in Opel.
